Roman Provincial AR Tetradrachm Macrinus (217-218 AD) Ch VF NGC
During his brief one year reign from AD 217 to 218, Emperor Macrinus made history as the very first Roman ruler arising from the equestrian class rather than the traditional senatorial ranks. This silver tetradrachm, minted in Beroea within the region of Cyrrhestica, offers a tangible connection to his short lived era. The coin beautifully merges classical imperial Roman design elements with the distinct artistic style of the Eastern provinces. The obverse displays a right facing bust of Macrinus, adorned with a laurel wreath and draped in classical attire. Surrounding his portrait is a Greek inscription representing his official imperial titles. On the reverse, a powerful eagle stands facing forward with its wings spread wide, holding a celebratory wreath in its beak. This particular ancient coin has been certified as Choice Very Fine, showcasing remarkably clear details and a beautiful, authentic patina that has developed over many centuries.
