During the mid third century, the ancient mint at Antioch produced striking silver alloy coinage that served as a vital medium of exchange in the Roman East. This particular billon tetradrachm, minted between 249 and 251 AD, represents the brief and turbulent reign of Emperor Trajan Decius. Crafted from billon, a low-purity silver alloy, the coin weighs approximately 0.43 troy ounces, carrying the physical weight of ancient imperial administration. The obverse of the coin features a right-facing bust of the emperor, adorned with either a laureate wreath or a radiate crown. On the reverse, a powerful eagle stands facing right upon a palm branch. The eagle is depicted with its wings fully spread, holding a ceremonial wreath securely in its beak. In the lower section of the design, known as the exergue, the letters S-C are inscribed, marking the traditional senatorial authority associated with the coinage. This specimen has survived the centuries in remarkable condition, graded as Choice Almost Uncirculated. The preservation of the eagle's feathers and the sharp details of the imperial portrait offer a direct window into the artistry of provincial Roman mints during a period of significant historical transition.
