Roman Rep. AR Denarius Mn. Cordius Rufus (46 BC) XF (Cr-463/1b)
This silver denarius, minted in 46 BC during the era of the Roman Republic, offers a fascinating window into ancient classical imagery. Weighing approximately 3.9 grams with a silver content of about 0.12 troy ounces, this specimen has survived the centuries in Extra Fine condition, preserving the intricate details of its artistic engraving. The obverse of the coin features the jugate heads of the Dioscuri, the mythological twin brothers Castor and Pollux, facing right. They are depicted wearing their traditional pilei, the distinctive egg-shaped felt caps, which are topped with stars. The legible inscription W.CORDI associates the issue with the moneyer Mn. Cordius Rufus. On the reverse, the design honors Venus Verticordia, the goddess who turns human hearts toward virtue. She is depicted standing and facing left, holding a pair of scales and a scepter. Perched upon her shoulder is the small figure of Cupid, completing a complex and symbolic scene from Roman mythology.
