Struck during a tumultuous period of the ancient world between 211 and 208 BC, this silver Victoriatus offers a direct connection to the fierce conflicts of the Roman Republic. The coin represents a tangible piece of military history, as the silver used to mint these issues was obtained from spoils taken from Greek cities that had aligned themselves with the famous Carthaginian general Hannibal. The obverse of the coin displays the powerful profile of Jupiter, the king of the Roman gods, facing to the right. On the reverse, the design depicts Victory standing as she erects a military trophy, symbolizing Rome's triumphs. Positioned in the lower field of the reverse is the letter L, which identifies the minting location as Luceria. This specific variety is documented under the reference Crawford 97/1a and has survived in an exceptional state of preservation, certified as Mint State.
