Roman Rep. Silver Denarius Cn. Len. Clodianus (88 BC) XF Cr-345/1

0.1200 troy oz 88 BC Extra Fine

Struck during the turbulent era of the Roman Republic, this silver denarius dates back to 88 BC. Minted in Rome under the authority of Cn. Cornelius Lentulus Clodianus, the coin represents a fascinating window into ancient classical artistry and state-sanctioned imagery. The obverse of this silver piece displays the helmeted head of Mars, the Roman god of war, facing to the right. The rendering captures the martial spirit of the republic during a century of intense social and political transformation. On the reverse, the goddess Victory is depicted guiding a two-horse chariot, known as a biga, as she speeds toward the right. In her hands, she holds both the reins and a celebratory wreath, symbolizing triumph. Below this energetic scene, the Latin inscription reads CN. LENTVS., identifying the issuing authority. This historical specimen is cataloged as reference Cr-345/1 and is preserved in Extra Fine condition.
