Struck during the Roman Republic in 137 BC, this silver denarius offers a glimpse into the classical artistry of ancient coinage. Weighing 3.94 grams, the coin features a detailed depiction of the helmeted head of Rome facing left on its obverse. Rome is adorned with a delicate necklace of beads. Below her chin, the mark X is visible, while the inscription TAMPIL is positioned behind her head. The reverse of the coin showcases Apollo driving a quadriga, a traditional four-horse chariot. Apollo is captured in motion, holding a bow, an arrow, reins, and a branch. Below the galloping horses, the inscription ROMA is clearly visible, identifying its origin.
