Roman Republic AR Denarius L. Sabinus (89 BC) F NGC (Cr-344/3)
Struck in the city of Rome in 89 BC, this silver denarius offers a tangible connection to the final century of the Roman Republic, long before the rise of the first emperors. Measuring approximately 17 millimeters across and weighing about 3.7 grams, the coin represents a vital denomination of ancient Roman daily life and commerce. The obverse side features the right-facing profile of King Tatius, a legendary figure from Rome's early history. Positioned just beneath his chin is a delicate palm frond, while the inscription SABIN is clearly visible behind his head, denoting the moneyer L. Titurius Sabinus who oversaw the minting of this issue. On the reverse, the design shifts to a dynamic scene of triumph. Victory is depicted driving a biga, a traditional two-horse chariot, as it charges toward the right. This classic piece of ancient artistry has survived over two millennia, preserved in a condition graded as Fine.
