Struck during a pivotal era of the Roman Republic, this silver denarius from 36 BC carries the portrait of Octavian, who would later be known as Augustus. The obverse displays his bare, bearded face looking to the right. Surrounding his likeness is the Latin inscription IMP CAESAR DIVI F III VIR ITER R P C, a powerful declaration of his political and familial authority. The reverse of this ancient coin depicts a tetrastyle temple, inside of which stands a veiled figure holding a lituus, a ceremonial wand. The architrave of the temple is inscribed with IDVO IVL. To the left of the structure, a lit altar stands ready for ritual, while a star is positioned inside the pediment. The outer edge of the reverse features the inscription COS ITER ET TER DESIG. Measuring approximately 17 to 18 millimeters in diameter and weighing about 3.91 grams, this silver piece is classified under the catalog reference Cr-540/2. Preserved in Very Fine condition, it offers a tangible connection to the complex political messaging of the late Roman Republic.
