Struck during the turbulent period of 32 to 31 BC, this silver legionary denarius is a remarkable survivor from the ancient Roman world. Weighing approximately 3.30 grams, the coin was minted to pay the vast armies of Marc Antony just before the decisive clash at Actium. Its design and weight of 0.1200 troy ounces of silver reflect the urgent military needs of a empire on the brink of transformation. The obverse features a detailed depiction of a Praetorian galley, complete with oars, navigating to the right. Surrounding this vessel is the abbreviated Latin inscription ANT AVG III VIR R P C, which references Antony's title as triumvir. This naval imagery highlights the maritime strength that was crucial to his campaign. On the reverse, the focus shifts to Rome's land forces. An aquila, the sacred legionary eagle, stands proudly between two military standards, known as signa. Below this display, the inscription LEG XX clearly identifies this issue as belonging to the twentieth legion. Preserved in Very Fine condition, this piece offers an incredibly tangible connection to the soldiers who carried it into battle over two millennia ago.
