During a turbulent decade in the third century, the breakaway Romano-Gallic Empire carved out its own identity under the rule of Emperor Postumus. This billon double denarius, minted between 260 and 269 AD, offers a tangible connection to this fascinating separatist state. Made from billon, a low-grade silver alloy, the coin represents the economic realities of an empire navigating political division and military challenges. Measuring 20 millimeters in diameter, the obverse of the coin displays a detailed portrait of Postumus. He is depicted wearing a radiate crown and clad in military armor (cuirassed), projecting an image of strength and imperial authority.
