This ancient bronze and silver alloy coin, known as a Billon Nummus, dates back to the reign of Constantius II, from 337 to 361 AD. Struck during his tenure as Caesar, the obverse of the coin displays a right-facing portrait of the ruler adorned with a pearl diadem. The reverse of these issues typically showcases classic military themes, reflecting the political imagery of the era. What makes this specific piece particularly compelling is its archaeological provenance. It was recovered as part of the famous Nether Compton Hoard, which was unearthed from an earthen vessel in 1989. This spectacular find consisted of 22,500 individual Billon Nummi, offering a fascinating window into the monetary circulation of the late Roman Empire. This specimen has survived the centuries in remarkable condition, graded as Extra Fine.
