Struck during the fifth century, this gold coin offers a window into the late Roman Empire under the rule of Emperor Theodosius II. Produced in Constantinople between the latter part of 408 AD and 420 AD, this solidus weighs 4.50 grams and contains 0.1200 troy ounces of gold. Its survival in an uncirculated state allows us to appreciate the detailed artistry of the era. The front of the coin displays a bust of the emperor, turned slightly to the right. He appears in military attire, wearing a helmet and a cuirass while holding a spear. This side bears the Latin inscription D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG. On the back, the personification of Constantinopolis is shown seated and facing left. She holds a globe topped by a figure of Victory, with a single star positioned in the left field.
