Rome Dbl Denarius Claudius II 268-270 AD VF NGC (Bicknor Hoard)

0.0300 troy oz 268-270 AD Very Fine (NGC)

In 2018, a remarkable discovery brought the ancient Roman world back into the light. The Bicknor Hoard yielded a selection of double denarius coins dating to the turbulent years of 268 to 270 AD, the brief window when Emperor Claudius II ruled the empire. Crafted from billon, a metal composition consisting of copper or bronze blended with a trace amount of silver, this coin survived the centuries in Very Fine condition. The obverse features a portrait of Claudius II wearing a radiate crown, a classic symbol of the double denarius denomination. On the reverse, these hoard coins display a variety of classical themes. Depending on the specific strike, they depict Roman deities, personified virtues, or military imagery that served as propaganda to unite a fractured empire. This certified specimen offers a direct connection to a buried treasure and the short-lived reign of a soldier-emperor.
