Rome Dbl Denarius Claudius II 268-270 AD VF NGC (Bicknor, Vault)
Deep within the soil of the English village of Bicknor, a metal detectorist in January 2018 encountered a strong signal near an ancient wall. Digging down, they uncovered clusters of Roman coinage, eventually revealing more than 650 pieces. This dramatic discovery prompted an official emergency excavation led by local finds liaison officer Kurt Adams and a dedicated team, securing a vital piece of archaeological history now known as the Bicknor Hoard. Among the recovered treasures are these billon double denarius coins, minted during the brief reign of Emperor Claudius II, which spanned from 268 to 270 AD. Billon is a specific ancient alloy consisting of copper or bronze with a very minor portion of silver. Each coin has survived the centuries in Very Fine condition, certified to verify its state of preservation. The front of the coin features the radiate bust of Emperor Claudius II, showing the ruler adorned with a spiked crown. On the reverse, the designs vary, showcasing a range of classical themes typical of the era, including Roman deities, personifications, and military motifs. These varied reverses offer a fascinating glimpse into the symbolic language of the ancient Roman Empire.
