This particular coin dates to the brief but active reign of Emperor Claudius II, who ruled from 268 to 270 AD. The front of the piece displays the crowned, radiate profile of the emperor himself. On the back, the imagery varies, as is typical for the era. These reverse designs frequently depicted Roman deities, military concepts, or personifications of imperial virtues. This specific specimen has survived the centuries in remarkable shape, receiving a professional grade of Extra Fine. What makes this piece especially intriguing is its modern origin story. It was recovered in 2018 as part of the Bicknor Hoard, a significant archaeological find of over 650 ancient coins unearthed near an old wall in the English village of Bicknor. Discovered by a metal detectorist, the site was subsequently excavated by archaeological authorities, bringing these long-buried treasures of the Roman world back into the light.
