Struck during a period of intense transition in the Roman Empire, this silver double denarius represents the brief reign of Emperor Gordian III, who held power from 238 to 244 AD. Elevated to the throne at a remarkably young age to restore public peace after a chaotic year of civil unrest, Gordian III was the grandson of Gordian I and the nephew of Gordian II. Though he was regarded as a benevolent and well-liked ruler compared to many of his contemporaries, his youth meant that actual administrative power resided in the hands of his Praetorian Prefects, first Timisitheus, whose daughter Tranquillina he married, and later Philip the Arab. Gordian III's life and reign were cut short when he was killed, paving the way for Philip to ascend the imperial throne. The obverse of this ancient silver coin features a detailed bust of the youthful Emperor Gordian III. The reverse displays one of several traditional designs common to the era, typically depicting Roman gods, goddesses, or figures representing key civic virtues and ideals.
