During the transformative reign of Peter the Great, which spanned from 1682 to 1725, the Russian Empire produced a distinctive style of currency known as wire money. These intriguing silver pieces were hammered from drawn silver wire, resulting in irregular shapes that make each surviving specimen completely unique. This particular silver kopek is a remarkable survivor from that era, preserved in Mint State 61 condition. Despite the crude manufacturing methods of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, the design elements remain visible. One side of the coin displays the traditional image of Saint George on horseback, thrusting his spear to slay a dragon. The opposite side of this silver kopek is filled with historic Cyrillic lettering, representing the official imperial authority of the period. Containing approximately 0.0120 troy ounces of silver, this coin offers a direct, tangible connection to the early modernization period of the Russian Empire under one of its most famous rulers.
