Seleucid Philip I Silver Tetradrachm (95-75 BC) CH AU NGC 5/2
During the turbulent final decades of the Seleucid Kingdom, skilled artisans struck silver tetradrachms that captured both royal authority and divine favor. This substantial silver coin, minted between 95 and 75 BC, weighs 14.99 grams and measures 29 millimeters in diameter. It survives today in an exceptional state of preservation, certified as Choice Almost Uncirculated. The obverse of the coin features a striking, right-facing portrait of King Philip I. He is depicted wearing a royal diadem, the traditional headband symbolizing Hellenistic kingship. The engraving showcases the detailed features of the ruler, offering a direct visual connection to the ancient Mediterranean world. On the reverse, the supreme deity Zeus is shown seated on a throne, facing left. The king of the gods holds a scepter in one hand and a small figure of Nike, the goddess of victory, in the other. Positioned beneath the throne is an AI monogram, a control mark used by the ancient mint officials. This classic depiction of Zeus was a powerful symbol of legitimacy and divine protection for the Seleucid monarch.
