During the late 1700s and early 1800s, Spanish colonial mints throughout the New World produced silver coinage that circulated globally. Among these issues is the 4 Reales coin, a mid-denomination piece containing approximately 0.39 troy ounces of silver. These pieces survive today in average circulated condition, showing the honest wear, light cleaning, or minor age-related markings expected of currency that passed through many hands over two centuries ago. The obverse of these historic silver coins displays a right-facing bust of the reigning Spanish monarch, adorned with a laurel wreath. Surrounding the royal portrait are Latin inscriptions, which often include the king's name, such as Carlos IV, and the year of mintage, such as 1804. These portraits offer a direct connection to the era of Spanish imperial rule across the Americas. On the reverse, the design features the crowned shield of the Spanish royal arms.
