The Swiss half-franc coin is a remarkable survivor of monetary history, retaining a design that has remained virtually unchanged for generations. Struck in 0.835 fine silver, each of these coins contains 0.0671 troy ounces of precious metal. These pieces represent a long-standing tradition of Swiss minting, with examples typically originating from the mid-twentieth century, though some earlier dates occasionally appear. The obverse of the coin features Helvetia, the female personification of Switzerland. She stands holding a spear in one hand and a shield emblazoned with the Swiss cross in the other, symbolizing strength and neutrality. The word HELVETIA is clearly inscribed alongside her figure. On the reverse, the coin's denomination of 1/2 Fr. is displayed alongside the year of minting. This text is nestled within a detailed wreath woven from oak leaves and alpine flowers, representing the natural beauty and strength of the Swiss landscape. A small mintmark letter B, indicating the Bern Mint, can also be found on the reverse of many of these issues.
