Thrace, Mesambria AR Tetradrachm (175-125 BC) Ch VF NGC 4/4
Crafted in ancient Thrace between 175 and 125 BC, this silver tetradrachm represents a fascinating era of coinage. Weighing 16.50 grams and containing 0.5300 troy ounces of silver, the coin carries the legacy of Alexander III, often known as Alexander the Great. It stands as a remarkable physical artifact from a distant epoch, preserved through the centuries with a distinct flan flaw that highlights its unique, handmade manufacturing process. The obverse of the coin displays a powerful right-facing bust of Heracles, the legendary hero, draped in his characteristic lion skin. On the reverse, the supreme deity Zeus is depicted seated and facing left, holding a scepter in one hand and an eagle in the other. To the right of the seated god, the Greek inscription "ALEXANDROY" is clearly visible, linking the piece to the enduring influence of Alexander's reign. This specimen has been certified by independent authenticators, who have evaluated its state of preservation as Choice Very Fine, with the grading service also noting its condition as Almost Uncirculated.
