Thrace Thasos AR Tetradrachm Dionysus (2nd-1st Cen. BC) Ch XF NGC
Dating back to the second and first centuries BC, this silver tetradrachm originates from the island of Thasos, located off the coast of Thrace. Weighing 16.78 grams and measuring 32 mm in diameter, the coin is a substantial example of ancient Greek regional artistry. This particular specimen has been graded as Choice Extra Fine. The front of the coin features the profile of Dionysus, the deity of wine and festivity, adorned with a wreath of ivy leaves. On the opposite side, the design depicts a nude Herakles. The hero stands holding his characteristic club, with the skin of the Nemean lion draped over his left arm. Legible Greek lettering on this side refers to the savior Herakles of the Thasians.
