Thracian/Scythian Gold Stater Coson (after 54 BC) MS NGC (4/4)
Struck in the ancient region of Thrace sometime after 54 BC, this gold stater offers a fascinating window into classical history. Weighing 8.41 grams (approximately 0.23 troy ounces of gold), the coin presents a remarkable blend of Roman imagery and regional minting. This particular specimen has been graded as Mint State, preserving its intricate details for over two millennia. The obverse of the coin displays a Roman consul, often identified as Brutus, marching to the left. He is flanked by two attending lictors, who were traditional Roman bodyguards carrying the symbols of state authority. Below this procession, the word KOSON is clearly visible in the exergue. On the reverse, a powerful eagle stands facing left with its wings spread wide. The bird is perched upon a scepter, holding a laurel wreath firmly in its right talon. The combination of the consul on one side and the imperial eagle on the other makes this ancient gold piece a captivating object of study.
