The United States Mint once produced a remarkably small gold coin that carried a face value of one dollar. Struck from 90 percent pure gold, this Type 1 Liberty Head coin contains just 0.0483 troy ounces of actual precious metal. Its diminutive size makes the level of detail achieved on its surfaces all the more impressive to explore. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY. A ring of thirteen stars encircles her profile, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, the coin displays its denomination of 1 Dollar along with the year of issue, framed by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Finding one of these historic gold pieces today in Almost Uncirculated condition is a notable event.
