The United States Mint once produced a remarkably small gold coin with a face value of just one dollar. Known as the Liberty Head Type 1, this delicate piece contains 0.0483 troy ounces of gold, minted with a purity of 0.900. Despite their historical significance, a vast number of these tiny treasures were melted down over the decades, making surviving specimens particularly intriguing to study. The obverse of this gold dollar showcases a left-facing profile of Liberty. She wears a hair band clearly inscribed with her name, and thirteen stars encircle her portrait to represent the original colonies. On the reverse, the design focuses on the coin's denomination and its year of manufacture, framed by the words United States of America. This specific coin has been officially certified in Mint State 63 (MS-63) condition, preserved inside a protective grading capsule. Its survival in such a high grade offers a rare, detailed look at a classic mid-nineteenth-century American design that has largely disappeared from the physical record.
