This ten dollar gold piece represents a long-running era in American coinage, with production spanning the years 1838 to 1907. Struck at various United States minting facilities including Philadelphia, Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco, each coin contains 0.4838 troy ounces of gold, alloyed to a purity of 0.900. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of the coin shows the profile of Liberty looking toward the left. She wears a hair band inscribed with her name, while thirteen stars encircle her portrait to represent the original colonies. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield across its chest. The eagle is surrounded by the country of origin, United States of America, alongside the face value of ten dollars.
