First appearing in the late 1830s, this ten-dollar gold piece represents a remarkably long-running design in United States coinage. Minted from 1838 to 1907, these coins were produced across several historic minting facilities, including Philadelphia, Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Over the decades, vast numbers of these gold pieces were melted down, making the surviving examples in Very Fine condition compelling objects of study for enthusiasts of early American currency. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield over its chest, holding the traditional symbols of war and peace. The bird is framed by the inscription of the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, alongside the face value of TEN D. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold, each coin contains 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this classic motif served as a cornerstone of American commerce during a period of massive industrial expansion and westward growth.
