1803 Large Cent Sm Date/Sm Fraction VF
In the early years of the United States Mint, hand-engraved dies led to fascinating variations in the nation's base-metal coinage. This 1803 copper Large Cent, preserved in Very Fine circulated condition, represents a classic era of American coining history. Minted in Philadelphia, this particular variety is distinguished by the specific sizing of its elements, notably featuring a small date on the obverse and a small fraction on the reverse. The obverse of the coin displays the Classic Head Liberty design, facing right, with the year 1803 struck below the bust. On the reverse, a delicate wreath encloses the denomination, which is spelled out as ONE CENT. Encircling this central wreath is the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, while the fractional value of 1/100 is positioned at the very bottom of the design. Out of a total mintage of 3,131,691 pieces for the year, this survivor showcases the early artistry of designer John Reich.
