The year 1857 marked the end of an era for United States coinage. For nearly a century, hefty copper cents circulated widely throughout the young nation, serving as a cornerstone of daily commerce. This particular coin represents the final issue of that historic denomination, featuring the Large Date variety that makes the final year of production so distinctive. On the obverse, a left-facing Liberty is depicted with her hair elegantly braided and bound. Thirteen stars encircle her bust, symbolizing the original colonies, with the date 1857 clearly struck below. The reverse is dominated by a central wreath enclosing the denomination, written out as One Cent. Surrounding this wreath is the legend United States of America. True to the traditions of early copper coinage from the Philadelphia Mint, this piece carries no mint mark. This specimen has been certified in Almost Uncirculated 58 condition, preserving the intricate details of the engraving.
