In 1814, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a striking copper one cent piece featuring the Classic Head design. This particular issue is highly regarded for its distinct styling, representing a brief and fascinating era in early American copper coinage before the design was permanently retired. Crafted from pure copper, these large cents carried a substantial weight and presence in daily commerce. The obverse of the coin showcases the Classic Head Liberty, facing right with her hair bound by a band. Below her likeness, the date 1814 is clearly visible, with this specific variety displaying the "Crosslet 4" style in the year. John Reich designed this iconic portrait, which captured a unique aesthetic of the early republic. On the reverse, a delicate wreath wraps around the central denomination, which reads "ONE CENT". Encircling this central motif along the outer border is the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Despite the passage of time and its certified Almost Good condition, the essential elements of this historic copper issue remain a captivating testament to early American manufacturing.
