In 1816, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a copper one-cent piece that represents a fascinating chapter in early American coinage. This substantial copper coin, preserved in Very Good condition, showcases the transition of early American design aesthetics during the post-War of 1812 era. The obverse of the coin features the Matron Head portrait of Liberty, a design crafted by John Reich and Robert Scot. Liberty faces right, her hair bound by a cord, presenting a dignified profile that defined the look of America's copper currency during this period. Below the portrait, the date of 1816 is clearly visible. On the reverse, a delicate wreath encloses the denomination of ONE CENT. Encircling this central motif is the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
