In 1817, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a copper cent that captures the spirit of early American coinage. This substantial copper piece, known to observers as a Large Cent, represents a fascinating era of everyday currency. Like other early issues from the Philadelphia facility, this coin does not bear a mint mark, distinguishing it as a product of the nation's primary coining institution. The front of the coin displays the Matron Head depiction of Liberty, surrounded by thirteen stars that represent the original colonies. On the reverse, a delicate wreath encircles the denomination of ONE CENT, which is itself bordered by the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Despite its worn, Almost Good condition, the essential design elements of this historic copper issue remain a captivating testament to early nineteenth-century American manufacturing.
