In the early decades of the United States, everyday commerce relied on substantial copper coinage. The 1818 Large Cent represents this foundational era of American currency, hailing from a series produced from 1816 to 1835. This particular specimen survives in Very Good circulated condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that passed through countless hands during the nineteenth century. The obverse features the Matron Head Liberty design, depicting an effigy of Liberty facing right, her hair bound by a band inscribed with the word "LIBERTY". Thirteen stars circle the border, representing the original colonies, with the year 1818 anchored at the bottom. This classic depiction is credited to the design work of Robert Scot or John Reich. On the reverse, the coin features the denomination "ONE CENT" nested inside a continuous wreath. Encircling this central wreath is the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, which did not use a mint mark at the time, this copper piece offers a tangible connection to the daily life and trade of early America.
