1822 Large Cent Good

The year 1822 marked a classic era for early American copper coinage. This United States large cent, struck in pure copper, represents a fascinating period of early minting history. Despite its age and the wear that places it in a Good grade, the coin carries the unmistakable character of early nineteenth century currency. On the obverse, the coin displays the Matron Head portrait of Liberty, facing right, with the year 1822 clearly struck below the bust. This design, crafted by John Reich and Robert Scot, presents a dignified representation of Liberty that defined the look of the nation's lowest denomination during this era. The reverse of the coin is framed by a delicate wreath that encircles the central denomination, which reads ONE CENT. Encircling the entire wreath is the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
