During the early decades of United States coinage, the tiny half dime served as a vital piece of daily commerce. Between 1829 and 1837, the mint produced the Capped Bust variety, a silver coin containing 0.0387 troy ounces of precious metal with a purity of 0.8924. These pieces, now found in average circulated condition, offer a tangible look at the craftsmanship of the early nineteenth century. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a draped Phrygian cap, a classic symbol of freedom, with her hair flowing down to her shoulders. The word LIBERTY is inscribed upon her band, surrounded by stars representing the young nation. On the reverse, a detailed eagle grips an olive branch of peace in one talon and a bundle of arrows in the other, symbolizing a readiness for defense. A shield is placed over the eagle's chest, and the denomination is indicated at the bottom.
