In the early decades of United States coinage, the copper cent was a substantial, heavy piece of currency that looked and felt vastly different from the pennies of today. This 1831 issue belongs to the Matron Head series, which spanned the years from 1816 to 1835. The design, attributed to either Robert Scot or John Reich, showcases an early American aesthetic that captured the spirit of a growing nation. The obverse features a profile of Liberty, her hair bound up in a style that earned this design its "Matron Head" moniker. Encircling this central portrait are thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the date 1831 positioned clearly at the bottom. This particular variety is noted for its large lettering, adding a distinct visual boldness to the design. On the reverse, a simple yet elegant wreath wraps around the central denomination of ONE CENT. The outer edge bears the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this copper coin survives in Very Fine condition, showing the honest wear of a piece that actively circulated in the pre-Civil War era.
