In the early decades of the United States, copper coinage was the backbone of daily commerce. This 1833 copper one cent piece represents the Matron Head series, a design era spanning the years 1816 to 1835. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin has survived nearly two centuries, carrying the honest wear of a piece that actively circulated in the young republic. The obverse features the classic effigy of Liberty, facing left and surrounded by a ring of thirteen stars to represent the original colonies. On the reverse, the denomination of ONE CENT is nestled inside a simple wreath, which is itself encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This particular specimen is in Good condition, showing the soft, worn details of a coin that passed through countless hands during the Jacksonian era.
