In the early decades of the United States, copper coinage was the backbone of daily commerce. This 1832 copper one cent piece belongs to the Matron Head series, which spanned the years 1816 to 1835. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin represents a fascinating era of early American manufacturing, designed by either Robert Scot or John Reich. The obverse of this coin displays the classic effigy of Liberty, facing left, surrounded by a ring of thirteen stars to symbolize the original colonies. On the reverse, the words ONE CENT are prominently featured, nestled within a simple wreath and encircled by the inscription United States of America. This particular specimen survives in Good condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that circulated heavily in the pre-1833 era.
