1833 Large Cent VG
In 1833, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a copper one cent coin that represents a fascinating era in early American coining. Known to history as part of the Matron Head series, which ran from 1816 to 1835, this large cent is a substantial piece of early copper currency. The design is attributed to either Robert Scot or John Reich, showcasing the evolving artistic direction of the young nation's mint. The obverse features a classic effigy of Liberty facing left, her hair bound by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Surrounding this central portrait are thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, the denomination ONE CENT is framed by a delicate wreath, which is in turn encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This particular specimen is preserved in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation during the early nineteenth century.
