0.0387 troy oz .8924 1836 Very Fine

The 1836 Capped Bust half dime represents a fascinating era of early United States silver coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this small five-cent piece is composed of 89.24 percent silver, containing 0.0387 troy ounces of the precious metal. Surviving in Very Fine condition, it offers a remarkably clear look at the artistry of the period. Designed by William Kneass, the obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap, a classic symbol of freedom, with a headband clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars flank the portrait, representing the original colonies, with the date 1836 positioned at the bottom. The reverse displays a detailed heraldic eagle with a protective shield draped across its chest. In its talons, the eagle grasps both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing a desire for peace alongside a readiness for defense. The denomination is indicated at the bottom as 5 C., while the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is featured above the eagle, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
