The year 1837 marked a fascinating period of refinement for United States coinage, beautifully represented by this Reeded Edge half dollar. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this silver coin carries no mint mark, which was the standard practice for the facility at the time. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the coin features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty on the obverse. In its talons, the eagle firmly grasps an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, representing the dual national themes of peace and defense.
