In 1837, the United States Mint produced a half dollar that marked a notable transition in American coinage. This silver piece, composed of 90 percent silver with a weight of 0.3868 troy ounces of precious metal, features a reeded edge rather than the lettered edges seen on earlier half dollars. This physical detail represents a shift in manufacturing techniques at the Philadelphia Mint during this era. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the obverse of the coin displays a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom, with her hair flowing down her neck. The word LIBERTY is inscribed across her band, and the year 1837 is struck below the bust. The reverse side presents a heraldic eagle with a shield placed over its chest. In its talons, the eagle grasps an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, representing peace and readiness. Surrounding the central image are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination, indicated as 50 CENTS.
