Introduced in 1838, this ten dollar gold piece represents a classic era of American coinage. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. This design was the work of Christian Gobrecht and remained a staple of United States currency for nearly three decades. On the reverse side, a proud heraldic eagle guards a shield draped across its chest. The eagle is surrounded by the legend naming the United States of America, with the denomination of ten dollars displayed below. Minted between 1838 and 1866, these pieces lack the later motto above the eagle. Each coin contains 0.4838 troy ounces of gold and was struck at one of several historic mint facilities, which included Philadelphia, Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, or San Francisco. These specific specimens are graded in Extra Fine condition, though some may show signs of past cleaning or previous use in jewelry.
