In the late 1830s, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced substantial copper coins that feel remarkably substantial compared to the pennies of today. This 1838 Large Cent, preserved in Extra Fine condition, offers a clear look at the early artistry of American coinage. Minted from pure copper, this piece represents a fascinating era of everyday commerce before the introduction of smaller, alloyed cents. The obverse features the Matron Head depiction of Liberty, a dignified profile designed by Christian Gobrecht. Her hair is bound up, and she wears a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Surrounding the portrait is a ring of stars, representing the young nation's states, and the year 1838 is stamped boldly at the bottom. On the reverse side, the coin displays a delicate laurel wreath that wraps around the central denomination of ONE CENT. Encircling this wreath is the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
