The year 1838 marked a significant moment in American numismatic history, particularly at the southern branch mint in New Orleans. This 10-cent silver coin displays the early, minimalist version of the Liberty Seated design, famously characterized by the absence of stars on the obverse. Struck from 0.900 fine silver, this piece contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal and represents the craftsmanship of the era. The obverse side, designed by Christian Gobrecht, features Liberty seated upon a rock. In her hands, she holds a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests on a shield. This particular variety is notable for its clean, open fields surrounding the central figure, as stars had not yet been added to the perimeter of the design. On the reverse, a simple, elegant wreath encircles the denomination. The inscription reads "ONE DIME" at the center, framed by the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the "O" mint mark representing the New Orleans facility. This circulated specimen, graded in Very Good condition, offers a tangible connection to the pre-1933 era of United States coinage.
