1839-1866 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle No Motto XF (Random Year)
During the mid nineteenth century, the United States Mint produced a striking five dollar gold piece that captured the spirit of a growing nation. Minted between 1839 and 1866, this specific variety of the Liberty Gold Half Eagle is distinguished by the absence of the scroll and motto above the eagle on the reverse, a design characteristic unique to this early era of the series. The obverse of this coin showcases a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle her image, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, a bold heraldic eagle guards a shield on its chest, clutching symbols of national strength. This eagle is framed by the legend proclaiming the United States of America alongside the face value of five dollars. Christian Gobrecht designed these elegant motifs, which were struck in 0.900 fine gold containing 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal. These half eagles were produced across a variety of historic mint locations, including Philadelphia, Carson City, Charlotte, Dahlonega, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Surviving in Extra Fine condition, these coins offer a tangible look at the craftsmanship of early American coinage.
