1839 Large Cent Silly Head Fine
In 1839, the United States Mint produced a copper one cent coin that collectors now refer to as the Silly Head variety. This piece belongs to the Young Head type of the classic Large Cent series, which spanned the years 1835 to 1839. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin represents a transitional moment in early American copper coinage, showcasing a unique aesthetic shift in the depiction of Liberty. The obverse of the coin features a youthful effigy of Liberty facing left, surrounded by a ring of thirteen stars representing the original colonies. Below her portrait, the date 1839 is clearly visible. On the reverse, the denomination of ONE CENT is centered within a delicate laurel wreath, which is itself encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
