In 1840, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of just 47,338 gold ten-dollar pieces. This particular specimen survived the decades in remarkable condition, surviving to be certified by professional graders at Mint State 61 (MS-61). Strikingly preserved, it represents an early era of American gold coinage, minted long before the turn of the twentieth century. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold, this ten-dollar denomination contains 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse features the classic depiction of Liberty, accompanied by the date 1840. Because it was struck at the main minting facility in Philadelphia, the coin bears no mintmark, leaving the fields clean and focused entirely on the traditional design elements.
