0.0000 troy oz 1840 Very Good

The year 1840 marked a transition in American copper coinage, represented beautifully by this Large Cent. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this substantial copper piece belongs to the Modified Matron Head series. Despite its age and the wear that places it in Very Good condition, the coin retains the unmistakable character of early American currency. On the obverse side, the profile of Liberty looks forward, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. Below her portrait, the date 1840 is clearly visible. The reverse is dominated by the denomination ONE CENT, which is enclosed within a delicate wreath. Surrounding this central design is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, a proud declaration of a young nation's identity.
