In 1840, the Philadelphia Mint produced a run of over two million copper Large Cents, including the distinctive Small Date variety. This substantial copper coin represents a fascinating era of early American currency, circulating widely in daily commerce long before the introduction of the smaller pennies we use today. The obverse of this coin features a classic profile of Liberty, designed by John Reich, with the year 1840 struck below the portrait. On the reverse, the words ONE CENT are nestled inside a delicate wreath, which is itself encircled by the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
