1840 Large Cent Sm Date Fine

0.0000 troy oz 1840 Fine

In 1840, the Philadelphia Mint produced a run of over two million copper Large Cents, including the distinctive Small Date variety. This substantial copper coin represents a fascinating era of early American currency, circulating widely in daily commerce long before the introduction of the smaller pennies we use today. The obverse of this coin features a classic profile of Liberty, designed by John Reich, with the year 1840 struck below the portrait. On the reverse, the words ONE CENT are nestled inside a delicate wreath, which is itself encircled by the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This particular specimen survives in Fine condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while preserving the essential elements of its historic nineteenth-century design.
